Abandoned Residents of Connecticut Ave

One of the legal mandates of the ANC redistricting process is to not split census blocks when creating ANC and Single Member District (SMD) lines, unless the circumstances are extraordinary. And yet, for decades, the border between ANCs 3F and 3C have done just that. And in the process have excluded thousands of residents of Connecticut Ave for having a voice in what happens at the heart of where they live, shop, commute and socialize.

The picture below shows an egregious example of block splitting along the border of ANC 3F, to the north and 3C to the south. The 3600 block of Connecticut Ave as well as 3701 Connecticut are carved out to not be included in 3C. People live at the corner of Porter St and Connecticut Ave and cannot vote for a commissioner that has any say in what happens to the the Cleveland Park commercial area. Neither can any of the approximately 2,000 residents of Connecticut Ave in Cleveland Park who live south of Tilden St.

For decades these residents have been excluded. It is time that this gerrymandering to dilute the voice of apartment residents be undone. Please let the Task Force know your thoughts.

There are three ways to provide input to the Task Force:

1)      You can send an email to ward3ancredistricting@gmail.com

2)      You can post a comment for the public record using this form

3)      You can show up at our Tuesday meetings and make comments live (just show up and raise your hand).  Information on our meetings can be found here.
